Australian Government launches data.gov.au

Library of Congress: NDIIPP 2010 Report Released

 

"Preserving Our Digital Heritage: The National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program 2010 Report" 

March 8, 2011 -- After a decade of action working to develop a national strategy to collect, preserve and make available significant digital content, especially information that is created in digital form only, for current and future generations, the Library of Congress has released "Preserving Our Digital Heritage: The National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program 2010 Report" (PDF).

On behalf of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The National Library of the Netherlands, we (DOAJ) would like to ask you to participate in their survey below. The survey aims to discover the extent of publisher’s knowledge, concern, and commitment with respect to digitization and long-term preservation. In addition, the expectations publishing institutions have of libraries within the context of long-term preservation and the potential for future partnerships will also be explored.
The results of this survey will be treated confidentially and will be joined with a concurrent study of national libraries.

Public Sector Information (PSI) metrics

In order to be able to measure the re-use of PSI in the Member States and Norway, the Commission ordered a benchmark study (MEPSIR) on Exploitation of PSI which will allow Europe to take further steps towards wider re-use of PSI. MEPSIR project Website

The study defines, tests and applies a methodology to measure the re-use of PSI in the Member States and Norway, serving as a basis for the review of the PSI Directive that will take place three years after its implementation deadline, before 1 July 2008.

Guidelines for accessible forms

In an age where user feedback and interaction has become so popular, accessible forms have become that much more important. Many sites have already embraced making their forms accessible, and done a pretty good job of it, but inevitably some will still lack that little extra something - as small as an inappropriately named label through to no accessible features at all.

How much work time spent on social media use in a government department is 'excessive'?

According to The Australia, at least one Australian Government agency is full of 'Bureaucrats twitting at our expense' (sic - the correct term is 'tweeting').

Based on a question which identified that, in a single week of measurement last year, staff at the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR), spent 400 hours using social media, The Australian reported that "Liberal senator Cory Bernardi said millions of dollars were being wasted as public servants whiled away the hours on social media sites."

I thought it worth unpacking this article and this number. Government agencies are struggling to decide whether to allow, and how to manage, social media use by staff - whether on official, professional or a personal basis.

How much social media use is appropriate? Should staff have access to the Department's official social media channels? How does a Department respond to claims that use may be excessive?
