What Is Social Media?

Social Media is an umbrella term that defines the various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and content creation. Social media use the "wisdom of crowds" to connect information in a collaborative manner online. Through social media, individuals or collaborations of individuals create web content, organize content, edit or comment on content, combine content, and share content. Social media uses many technologies and forms, including RSS and other syndicated web feeds, blogs, wikis, photo-sharing, video-sharing, podcasts, social networking, social bookmarking, mashups, widgets, virtual worlds, micro-blogs, and more.

“The Power of Information Review (POIR), commissioned by the Cabinet Office, explored the Government’s role in maximising the benefits for communities through new technologies and online tools.

The Review examined the potential to empower the public through information sharing sites on the internet and how these sites, and the knowledge and information held by others, could improve their lives.

The authors, Tom Steinberg, of mySociety, and Ed Mayo, Chief Executive of the National Consumer Council, made 15 recommendations on how Government should respond to the growth of online communities and the new uses for public sector information (PSI). It looked at how PSI could be re-used to benefit communities and how Government could get involved.”

Transparency in Government Act 2008

“The Transparency in Government Act of 2008 is a broad legislative effort intended to make the work of Congress and the executive branch more transparent by creating laws and regulations that would bring more information online and available to the public in a timely manner. The draft legislation is an amalgamation of bills that have already been introduced, along with new provisions. If enacted, it would create historic changes in the way the executive and legislative branches provide information to the public, and Sunlight foundation believes it would foster a better and more complete understanding by the public of how the government works.”

After the launch of space VOD Public Senate ( french Sénat) and the 24-hour channel 24 on the Internet in January 2008, the news channel continues its policy development strategy and sign a partnership agreement with Dailymotion, the first french-sharing site videos.

When an equivalent for European Parliament? WithIn one year will take place  the European elections. The use of Dailymotion or other YouTube is nevertheless likely to improve the audience of institutional websites especially among young voters.
