Public Services 2.0: The Impact of Social Computing on Public Services

Abstract

The report gives an overview of the main trends of Social Computing, in the wider context of an evolving public sector, and in relation to relevant government trends and normative policy visions within and across EU Member States on future public services. It then provides an exhaustive literature review of research and practice in the area of Social Computing and identifies its key impact areas in the public sector.

Australia's Government 2.0 Taskforce has announced the winners of its structured brainstorming competition, which was held in September - October this year.

The competition involved public submissions and voting via an ideas market system with the final decision on winners being made by the Taskforce.

In the structured brainstorming category there were two winning ideas, both nominated by Brad Peterson,

• Government Gazettes in XML : A single feed for all publications updates would allow third parties to track issues of interest and reuse the information in ways that haven't been thought of yet.
• Whole of government persistent URL resolver service

Best online public services in Europe awarded in Malmö (Sweden)

The winners of the 2009 European eGovernment Awards have been announced today at the eGovernment Ministerial Conference in Malmö (Sweden). The awarded projects were selected for their innovative contribution to increasing the efficiency of public services through the use of digital technologies. In their respective categories the winners are: the European Order for Payment Application (Austria and Germany), Genvej (Denmark), the Italian Public Administration eMarketplace (Italy) and Licensing of Hunters via the “Multibanco” ATM Network (Portugal).

The National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program Releases Web Archiving Video

October 7, 2009 – “Web content changes all the time. If we don't save that content before it disappears, a major part of our cultural history will be lost.”

This is the message of the second video in the Library of Congress National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program’s video series. The just-released video, "Web Archiving," discusses the Library’s approach to collecting and preserving content found on the World Wide Web.

The three-minute video is targeted to librarians, archivists, and others interested in working with digital content.
